A Thermal Cutoff in the 12V-2×6 Cable, a 1,000 Hz Panel, and B450’s Return

Corsair puts a thermal switch inside the 12V-2x6 cable, LG's 1,000 Hz UltraGear needs a DisplayPort 2.1 card before anything else, and Gigabyte quietly lists new B450 boards for DDR4 holdouts.

Three hardware stories share a theme: the part that decides the outcome is not the headline part. Corsair and ASUS attack the 12V-2×6 connector problem from opposite ends, LG’s 1,000 Hz monitor is gated by its cable before its panel, and Gigabyte revives an eight-year-old chipset because of what memory costs.

Two 12V-2×6 safeguards, and only one covers most cards

Corsair's ThermalProtect cable puts a bimetallic, normally closed thermal switch inside a cable comb 30 mm from the GPU end, wired in series with the S3 (Sense0) and S4 (Sense1) signal wires (Corsair's own technical write-up). Past a trip point rated at 65 degrees C plus or minus 5, the switch opens, the sense lines lose their ground reference, and the GPU reads that as inadequate power available and shuts itself down. It resets on its own once the cable cools. No firmware, no software, no PSU-specific support: Corsair states it works with any GPU using a native 12V-2×6 or backward-compatible 12VHPWR socket, on any brand of supply with a 12V-2×6 output. It now ships with the refreshed RM850e and RM1000e, both ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 compliant and rated Cybenetics Platinum (TechPowerUp on the RMe refresh).

The exclusion in Corsair's compatibility list is the interesting part: a 2×8-pin to 12V-2×6 adapter puts the junction outside what the sensor can see, so the protection disappears exactly where a marginal connection is most likely. Even in the supported case, the switch reads one point on the cable jacket while the heat that destroys these connectors concentrates at the contact interface inside the plug. It measures a proxy on purpose, because a proxy needing no power and no handshake works on hardware nobody has to certify.

GPU Tweak III v2.1.8.0, released August 17, comes at it from the measurement side, adding an auto-shutdown option on cards carrying Power Detector+ hardware, which senses current on each of the six 12V pins individually; sustained high current raises a countdown dialog and then powers the system down (TechPowerUp on the GPU Tweak update). ASUS has not published the trigger parameters and reported figures vary; Igor's Lab reads it as a per-contact limit rather than one board-level number, and notes the option is off until a user turns it on. Four cards support it: ROG Astral RTX 5090, Astral LC RTX 5090, Astral RTX 5080, and ROG Matrix RTX 4090.

Per-pin current is the better measurement, since imbalance across the six conductors is the failure mechanism and cable temperature is only a downstream symptom. It is also locked to four halo cards and dependent on a running OS, driver, and background utility. The bimetallic switch instruments the problem worse and covers vastly more hardware, including cards from vendors with no telemetry story at all.

The buying order that falls out of this is to sort the connector first. A ThermalProtect cable or a native 12V-2×6 run from a current supply costs a fraction of the card it protects, and that card is harder and dearer to replace than it was a year ago.

LG's 1,000 Hz panel is gated by the port, not the GPU

LG's UltraGear 25G590B runs 1920×1080 at a native 1,000 Hz on an IPS panel, overclockable to 1,100 Hz, and Tom's Hardware puts it at $999.99 with preorders open. LG's spec page lists free expedited shipping from September 1 and attaches the conditions that make this a compatibility story: the maximum refresh rate requires Windows 11, a DisplayPort 2.1 connection, and an RTX 50 series card or a Radeon RX 9070, 9060, or 7900 series or newer. The display side is DP 2.1 UHBR20 plus dual HDMI.

Two practical points follow. The port requirement is the real gate, because a GPU that renders 1,000 frames per second in an older shooter still cannot present them over a link that lacks the bandwidth, and the qualifying GPU list is short for exactly that reason. The second is LG's own note that the 1,100 Hz overclock may limit adaptive sync. Giving up a variable refresh window to gain 100 Hz is a bad trade in almost every real game, because frame-time consistency is what removes visible judder, not the ceiling printed on the box.

The monitor decision is its own calculation: check the output on the card already in the machine before buying the panel, because at this refresh rate the connector decides the outcome before the silicon gets a vote.

Gigabyte lists two new B450 boards, DDR4 slots included

Gigabyte's B450M D3HP and B450M D3HP WIFI6E turned up on the company's own product and support pages in mid-August, not through a press release, which is normally how a compatibility refresh reaches the market rather than a formal launch. Both are Micro-ATX AM4 boards built around the eight-year-old B450 chipset, with a 4+2-phase digital VRM, four DDR4 DIMM slots rated up to 128GB, a PCIe 3.0 x4 primary M.2 slot backed by a second PCIe 2.0 x2 slot, four SATA ports, and official compatibility with Ryzen 3000, 4000, and 5000 series chips, per Gigabyte's own specification pages. The WIFI6E variant adds a Realtek RTL8852CE radio for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4; otherwise the two boards are identical. Igor's Lab, which first detailed the listings, notes neither pricing nor a launch date has been confirmed, which is the actual open question for how relevant these boards end up being.

The reason to build one at all is the same one that brought back the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in July: DDR4 continues to sell for a fraction of an equivalent DDR5 kit, and that gap has not closed as 2026's DRAM price surge has run on. A new B450 board does not fix the actual bottleneck, buyers still need a Ryzen chip and a case, but it removes the last obstacle for anyone reviving an old AM4 system or building fresh around DDR4 pricing instead of DDR5's. Tom's Hardware frames it directly as another DDR4 answer to what it calls exorbitant RAM prices.

For a budget AM4 build today, the boards matter once pricing shows up; until a number exists, they are a listing, not an option.
