Overview

GeForce2 GTS is the main starting point for the GeForce2 desktop family. It followed GeForce 256 with more throughput and NVIDIA’s GeForce2-era feature messaging, while staying in the DirectX 7 fixed-function world.

For retro builds, GTS is a strong Windows 98 and early Windows 2000-era card, but it should be separated from MX, Pro, Ultra, and later Ti models because those names describe different performance and market positions.

Why It Mattered

GeForce2 GTS launched the second GeForce generation and became the baseline for many 2000-era enthusiast and gaming PCs. NVIDIA's official timeline identifies GeForce2 GTS as the first per-pixel shading GPU.

Collector Notes

Record board partner, memory size, memory type, cooler, output layout, and whether the card is GTS, Pro, Ultra, or MX. Retail GTS boards are useful reference points for the 2000 GeForce2 generation.

Common Failure Points

Small fan wear, SDR/DDR and model-name confusion, and legacy driver support are the usual concerns. The card is not a DirectX 8 programmable-shader part.

Used-Market Caution

Confirm exact GeForce2 model before buying. Check fan noise, memory artifacts, AGP compatibility, and whether the seller has tested more than a desktop boot.
