Two numbers landed within a day of each other and look like they disagree. Mercury Research has AMD above 30 percent of client x86 for the first time, and Amazon's CPU best-seller list has two Intel parts back in the top ten after months of an all-AMD board. Memory pricing explains most of the distance between them.
AMD's record quarter came from laptops, not desktops
AMD took 30.3 percent of client x86 shipments in the second quarter of 2026 against Intel's 69.7 percent, the first time its combined desktop and mobile share has passed 30, according to Mercury Research figures published by Tom's Hardware. Desktop share reached 34.9 percent, up 2.7 points year over year. Mobile reached 28.9 percent, up 8.4 points. Server reached 34.5 percent, up 7.3. Overall x86 share sat at 30.7 percent, and 34.1 percent once IoT and SoC silicon are folded in.
The desktop line is the one enthusiasts watch and the one that moved least. Almost all of the year-over-year movement is in laptops and servers, which are decided by design wins and OEM contracts rather than by anyone reading a review. Mercury's Dean McCarron attributed the quarter's unusual growth, more than 10 percent sequentially for the total CPU market, partly to Intel's supply recovering after several constrained quarters, especially in mobile client. That is worth holding onto: share moving while both vendors ship more units is a different situation from one vendor stalling. TechPowerUp reads the same data as putting Intel back at 1995 levels, a framing that depends on which slice of the market is being counted.
Zen 6 shows up in the toolchain before it shows up in a socket
LLVM 23.1 shipped with an AMD znver6 target, Phoronix reports, and the release notes pair that target with AVX-512 BMM support. Compiler enablement is not a launch date, but instruction-set details tend to be settled in a stable toolchain branch well before retail silicon exists, and a stable branch is what distributions build against. AMD has already shipped Zen 6 on the server side as the 6th Gen EPYC "Venice" parts, per TechPowerUp's market-share writeup, so the open question for desktop buyers is timing rather than architecture.
DDR4 compatibility is doing Intel's selling
The Core Ultra 7 270K Plus entered Amazon's CPU top ten at number six for $290, and the Core i7-14700K at number nine for $312, Tom's Hardware reports. The 14700K is not the stronger gaming chip in that list and is not cheaper than the 270K Plus. It is there because it drops into an existing LGA 1700 board and runs DDR4, and the AM4 Ryzen 5 5500 holding second place is the same behavior on the other side of the aisle. Retail rankings move hourly, so treat the positions as a snapshot rather than a trend.
The reason is on the memory shelf. 32GB of DDR5-6000, the capacity and speed most gaming builds settle on, crossed $400 in Tom's Hardware's daily spot check, more than four times the low points of recent years. When a memory kit costs more than the processor it feeds, it stops being a line item and starts picking the platform.
Supply offers no comfort. Micron's Raghu Sreeramaneni told Hot Chips on August 23 that HBM needs roughly three times the wafer area of DDR5 for the same capacity, and that the gap is "definitely not getting better" with each generation, as Tom's Hardware reported from the conference, which also notes conventional DRAM contract prices rising 90 to 95 percent quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026. Every wafer that goes to AI memory is a wafer that does not become a DIMM, and that arithmetic does not care what the CPU roadmap says.
For anyone sitting on a working LGA 1700 or AM4 board with DDR4 already installed, the cheapest real gain right now is a faster CPU in the socket that is already there. A fresh AM5 or current Intel build pays the memory premium on top of the platform cost, and Micron's own framing gives no reason to expect that premium to ease inside this year. If a new platform is genuinely needed, buy the memory first and size the CPU around what is left.
