Anyone pricing a PC build in July 2026 runs into the same wall: memory. A mainstream 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit, the default choice for a gaming or workstation build, now sells for roughly $360 to $490 at major US retailers. Through most of 2025, the same class of kit sold for $75 to $125 in routine retailer promotions. That is not a sale that ended. It is a structural change in where DRAM wafers go, and it is worth understanding before spending money on it.

For contrast, archived deal listings from 2025 show the Patriot Viper Venom 32 GB kit at $74.99, a Crucial Pro 32 GB kit at $82.99, and a Corsair Vengeance RGB 32 GB kit at $124.99. Depending on which baseline is used, current street prices are three to five times higher than a year ago.

The market research firm TrendForce has been documenting this cycle in its quarterly DRAM reports, and the numbers are unlike anything the DRAM market has produced before:

Contract prices are what large OEMs pay for memory in bulk. Retail DIMM pricing follows them with a lag of one to two quarters, which is why shelf prices kept climbing through the first half of 2026 even on weeks when nothing new happened in the supply chain.

Why this happened

The mechanism is capacity displacement, not a demand spike from PC builders. The same DRAM fabrication lines that produce desktop DIMM chips also produce the high-bandwidth memory stacks and high-capacity server RDIMMs that AI clusters consume. Nothing in the current reporting points to falling retail prices in 2026; long-term supply agreements and server priority are locked in for quarters ahead. At the same time, the steep part of the curve looks finished, because consumer buyers have simply stopped absorbing further increases.

Practical guidance while this lasts:

  • Treat memory as the first line item in a build budget, not the last. A 32 GB kit at $400-plus changes which CPU and GPU tiers make sense.
  • Buy the capacity actually needed now. The old habit of doubling capacity because RAM is cheap does not survive current pricing. 32 GB remains the right target for gaming; 64 GB and up should be justified by a real workload.
  • Do not pay a premium for speed bins above DDR5-6000 CL30 on AMD or DDR5-6400 on Intel unless the workload is measurably memory-bound. The performance delta is small; the price delta right now is not.
  • Check the used and open-box lanes before paying new-retail prices, but compare against sold prices, not asking prices.
  • DDR4 platforms are suddenly interesting again. DDR4 did not escape the squeeze entirely, but AM4 remains a far cheaper total platform, which is exactly why AMD has started reissuing AM4 CPUs. Budget builders should price a full AM4 system against an AM5 one before committing.
