Gigabyte Brings Back the B450 Chipset to Dodge DDR5 Prices

Gigabyte lists two new B450 boards that keep AM4 and DDR4 buildable in 2026, and AMD posts early Linux kernel patches for Zen 6 client overclocking months before the chips exist.

DDR5 kit prices have stayed high enough for long enough that a new AM4 build with DDR4 still makes financial sense, and Gigabyte has responded with fresh hardware for a socket AMD stopped actively refreshing years ago. AMD's software side is moving in the opposite direction: Linux kernel patches for Zen 6 client chips are already public, months before any of that hardware ships.

Gigabyte lists two new B450 boards, DDR4 slots included

Gigabyte's B450M D3HP and B450M D3HP WIFI6E turned up on the company's own product and support pages in mid-August, not through a press release, which is normally how a compatibility refresh reaches the market rather than a formal launch. Both are Micro-ATX AM4 boards built around the eight-year-old B450 chipset, with a 4+2-phase digital VRM, four DDR4 DIMM slots rated up to 128GB, a PCIe 3.0 x4 primary M.2 slot backed by a second PCIe 2.0 x2 slot, four SATA ports, and official compatibility with Ryzen 3000, 4000, and 5000 series chips, per Gigabyte's own specification pages. The WIFI6E variant adds a Realtek RTL8852CE radio for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4; otherwise the two boards are identical. Igor's Lab, which first detailed the listings, notes neither pricing nor a launch date has been confirmed, which is the actual open question for how relevant these boards end up being.

The reason to build one at all is the same one that brought back the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in July: DDR4 continues to sell for a fraction of an equivalent DDR5 kit, and that gap has not closed as 2026's DRAM price surge has run on. A new B450 board does not fix the actual bottleneck, buyers still need a Ryzen chip and a case, but it removes the last obstacle for anyone reviving an old AM4 system or building fresh around DDR4 pricing instead of DDR5's. Tom's Hardware frames it directly as another DDR4 answer to what it calls exorbitant RAM prices.

AMD posts Zen 6 client patches for Linux, months before the chips exist

An AMD engineer posted patches to the Linux kernel mailing list in late July extending the HSMP (Host System Management Port) driver, previously reserved for EPYC server chips, to Zen 6 client silicon: the Medusa mobile APUs and the Olympic Ridge desktop parts. Phoronix covered the patch set, which defines a separate client message interface the patches themselves describe against Ryzen Master, AMD's Windows-only overclocking and monitoring tool. The message IDs cover setting the TjMax threshold, enabling or disabling overclocking, per-core OC frequency and OC voltage, and dynamic FCLK control, the same categories Ryzen Master exposes on Windows today.

None of it does anything yet. The patches are freshly posted, not merged, and no user-space tool has been announced to put a Linux desktop in front of these controls even once they land. It is also a separate effort from the Zen 5/Zen 6 identification fix that shipped in Linux 7.2-rc6 earlier this month: that patch corrected which CPU model IDs the kernel reads as Zen 5 versus Zen 6, while this one is new client-specific plumbing for chips that have not launched. Taken together they say AMD's kernel work on Zen 6 is running well ahead of the silicon, which is normal for a platform this far out, but it makes Linux-side overclocking support a fact about groundwork right now, not a feature anyone can use.

For a budget AM4 build today, the Gigabyte boards matter once pricing shows up. For Zen 6, the patches are worth knowing about only as a preview of what Ryzen Master parity on Linux might eventually look like, not a reason to expect it soon.
