PCIe 6.0 SSDs Enter Production, and OLED Gets an Inkjet Recipe

PCIe 6.0 storage is real, and it is not for your desktop

Samsung announced on July 8 that its PM1763 enterprise SSD entered mass production, one of the industry's first PCIe 6.0 drives (Samsung announcement, TechPowerUp coverage). The 16TB model reads at up to 28.4 GB/s and writes at up to 21.9 GB/s, built on ninth-generation V-NAND with a 4-nanometer controller, and Samsung claims better than twice the performance of the previous PM1753 at around 1.8 times the power efficiency. The target is AI and HPC servers, where drives feed model weights and training data to GPUs fast enough to keep them busy.

For perspective, a PCIe 5.0 x4 link tops out just under 16 GB/s per direction, so a drive like this has no consumer platform to plug into, and none is close: desktop chipsets, controllers, and thermals are still settling into Gen 5. The practical read is less about speed envy and more about where the money flows. The same V-NAND output and controller engineering that could ease consumer supply is being pointed at server products first, which is both why the shortage persists and where every storage roadmap now starts.

The first printed OLED monitor changes the cost math, eventually

MSI unveiled the Pro Max 271UPJW12 in mid-July, the first monitor built on an inkjet-printed OLED panel, made by TCL CSOT (TFTCentral on the MSI panel, FlatpanelsHD report). The panel is 27-inch 4K at 120Hz with a true RGB-stripe subpixel layout, rated around 300 nits full-screen with 1,000-nit HDR peaks and DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. The RGB stripe matters for desktop work: it avoids the text fringing that the triangular and offset subpixel layouts of current QD-OLED and WOLED panels produce. Lenovo announced the first laptop using the same technology in the same week (Tom's Hardware on the Lenovo IJP laptop).

The technology is the story. Inkjet printing deposits the organic emitter material directly instead of evaporating it through fine metal masks, wasting less material and simplifying the line, which is the first structural cost lever OLED monitors have seen in years. The caveats sit right next to the promise: TCL CSOT is running low volume on an older Gen 5.5 line, with the larger Gen 8.6 fab not producing until 2027, and MSI has not named a price or ship date. Early printed OLED will carry new-process pricing; the cheaper-OLED payoff is a 2027-and-later story if yields cooperate.

The direction of travel is the real takeaway: the fastest storage now ships server-first, and the most interesting monitor of the summer is interesting because of how its panel is manufactured, not how fast it refreshes.
