The Memory Crunch Comes for Budget GPUs While GoldenEye 007 Gives Up Its Source

Zotac's parent company expects entry-level cards to get scarcer and pricier through the rest of 2026, the grey market is already re-soldering old flagships, and after five years GoldenEye 007's code is fully rebuilt.

The memory crunch spent the summer working through flagship pricing, and it has now reached the part of the market that actually moves volume. The company behind Zotac, Inno3D, and Manli says entry-level cards will get scarcer and dearer from here, while the second-hand market is already re-soldering six-year-old flagships into something buyable. The one piece of unambiguous good news this week is 29 years old and runs on an N64.

Zotac's parent sees the shortage moving downmarket

PC Partner, the Hong Kong manufacturer behind Zotac, Inno3D, and Manli, used its half-year results, filed August 14, to warn of a substantial increase in graphics card costs through the rest of 2026, with entry-level cards facing the most severe shortages (VideoCardz reports). The mechanism is the familiar one: AI infrastructure demand keeps squeezing GDDR6 and GDDR7 supply, the same pressure that already pushed the RTX 50 Super refresh into 2027. A budget card has nowhere to hide a bigger memory bill; the premium a flagship absorbs into its margin swallows a cheap card's margin whole, so the bottom of the stack is where cards stop being made first.

The first-half numbers explain the tone. PC Partner's own-brand card shipments fell 18.4 percent year over year, average selling prices rose 10.7 percent, and group net profit still more than doubled (TechSpot's breakdown). An analyst cited by Tom's Hardware suggests board makers are raising prices beyond what memory costs alone explain, and selling far fewer cards at much higher profit does not argue hard against that reading.

None of this is a GeForce-specific problem. Intel's Arc Pro B70, a 32GB Battlemage workstation card, climbed 26 to 48 percent across US, German, and South Korean retail in roughly a month, reaching the equivalent of about $1,975 in Korea by August 16 (VideoCardz price tracking). Anything carrying a large pool of graphics memory is repricing, whatever GPU sits next to it.

The grey market answers with a soldering iron

Modified GeForce RTX 3080 cards with 20GB of GDDR6X are appearing in volume on Chinese second-hand channels at around 3,000 yuan, roughly $445 (VideoCardz): former mining-farm cards rebuilt with 2GB memory chips in place of the original 1GB parts, fitted with blower coolers and sold under "RTX 3080 20G AI" labels. The same report puts the median US price of an RTX 5070 at $899.99 this month, about 64 percent over its $549 MSRP. When a rebuilt RTX 3080 undercuts the current midrange by half, the six-year-old card is not the strange part of that sentence.

In Japan the workaround is a service. A repair shop in Saitama upgrades an RTX 2080 Ti from 11GB to 22GB for 45,000 yen, about $282, roughly $25 per added gigabyte, and took delivery of 200 Samsung GDDR6 modules on August 15 to keep the queue moving (Tom's Hardware). The interesting part is less the price than the sourcing: a small shop landing 200 loose Samsung modules mid-crisis has a supply line ordinary buyers do not. The usual used-card cautions apply at double strength on all of these boards: no warranty, unknown mining history, and firmware NVIDIA has never seen.

After five years, GoldenEye 007 is fully decompiled

After roughly half a decade of work, the GoldenEye 007 decompilation project led by KholdFuzion has reached 100 percent: the N64 shooter's entire binary is rebuilt as readable, recompilable source (Tom's Hardware, code mirrored on GitHub). That opens the door to things ROM hacking never did well: logic-level mods, engine fixes, and native ports. A PC port built on the decompiled code is reportedly already in testing, with no public release date yet (XDA's report).

The path from here is well worn. Super Mario 64 and Perfect Dark went through the same stages, and both ended up with native PC ports carrying modern controls, widescreen, and uncapped frame rates; GoldenEye's original single-stick control scheme is exactly the kind of thing a source port fixes first. The project publishes rebuilt code rather than a playable game, so nothing changes for players today. But GoldenEye has never officially appeared on PC, and a tested community port built from the game's own source is the closest it has ever come.
