Gamescom week ended two long waits at once: DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction is downloadable, and the Game Ready driver moved to a new branch after 29 quiet days. Both arrive with qualifiers worth reading before updating, and every figure below is NVIDIA's own claim on NVIDIA's own channel until somebody measures it independently. No edition ran last Monday, so this one also picks up what that gap left behind.
Ray Reconstruction is downloadable, through an opt-in channel
DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction runs on every GeForce RTX GPU and arrives through an NVIDIA app update, but getting it means opening Settings, then About, and opting in to Early Access releases. NVIDIA's own instructions say the official release "will follow in September", which is a different thing from the "available now" in the headline. The driver floor is 580.88 WHQL or newer, so the new 616.56 is not required. Applying it is a per-game override under Driver Settings, DLSS Override and Model Presets, choosing Custom and then either Recommended or Preset F, with a global switch for the whole library. NVIDIA lists 30 games it can be forced into, among them Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Half-Life 2 RTX and Portal with RTX.
The model behind it is a second-generation transformer that NVIDIA says delivers "35% more compute capability, and processes 20% more parameters, while maintaining similar performance to the previous model". That last clause carries the weight. This is an image-quality change, and NVIDIA is claiming frame-cost parity rather than a speedup, so anyone hoping the update buys back performance is reading the wrong feature. The stated gains are lighting accuracy, temporal stability and clearer motion in ray-traced and path-traced content, and NVIDIA reprints hands-on quotes from TechPowerUp, KitGuru, DSO Gaming and Club386 all saying there is no real performance cost. Those are genuinely independent tests, but they are also the four quotes NVIDIA chose to put on its own page.
Public testing had already started before any of that, because the Ray Reconstruction files shipped inside the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta and people swapped them into roughly six other titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy and Alan Wake 2. DSOGaming reported the leak and published the install method, and third-party coverage was circulating the day before NVIDIA's Gamescom post went up. Nothing about the leak changes the model, but it does mean the earliest impressions circulating came from files that were not meant to be public, the same pattern as the DLSS 5 library found in NBA 2K27 a few days later.
616.56 moves the driver to a new branch
GeForce Game Ready 616.56 WHQL landed on August 26, 29 days after 610.88 and the longest gap this series has tracked, and it is not a point release on the same code: the release notes head the document "Release 615 Driver for Windows", so the R610 line is done. It is Game Ready for STAR WARS Zero Company, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, the last of which already shipped DLSS 4.5 two weeks earlier without a driver of its own.
The fix list is worth more than the game list, and none of it is in the news post, only in the release notes PDF. Two gaming bugs are gone: frame rates could exceed V-SYNC in DOOM: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle when DLSS Frame Generation was set to 3x or higher, and Outer Worlds texture flicker that arrived with the R595 and R610 drivers is fixed, which makes it a regression NVIDIA introduced and has now closed. On the general side, 32-bit DirectX 12 applications could crash the driver, Chief Architect crashed on RTX 40 series cards under 610.47, ASUS Armory Crate color profiles stopped applying under R590, and OpenCL buffers larger than 2GB could not be created in Tycho Tracker. One open issue stays on the list: "Prefer Maximum Performance" power management may not be applied correctly.
For anyone running compute rather than games, the branch change matters more than any of that. R615 carries CUDA 13.4 and switches the default OpenCL JIT compiler to the Clang and NVVM 7.0 stack that has been opt-in since the 510 branch, retiring the legacy 3.4-era compiler. The practical signal is a library swap, nvvm in place of the old compiler binaries, and OpenCL kernels gain native half and 128-bit integer types. If an OpenCL workload starts behaving differently after this update, check the compiler before blaming the GPU: this is a default-behavior change, not a bug fix, and it is the sort of thing that surfaces as a numerical difference rather than a crash.
RTX Mega Geometry solves a Nanite problem, in October
Unreal Engine 5's Nanite scales geometric detail automatically, but the moment a scene is ray traced, Nanite elements collapse to a single static low-detail mesh, because building acceleration structures across full Nanite geometry is prohibitively expensive under DXR 1.2 and Vulkan as they stand today. The visible result is a shadow or a reflection that disagrees with the object casting it: full-detail vehicles, foliage and debris on screen, simplified stand-ins in the ray-traced pass. RTX Mega Geometry keeps the full-detail representation in the ray tracing scene, which is a real rendering problem being solved rather than a preset being renamed.
It debuts in Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, and NVIDIA says the work will later be folded into Microsoft's DirectX Raytracing 2.0. That second part is the one to watch, because a vendor technique that lands in DXR becomes available to every Unreal Engine 5 title instead of needing a per-game integration. No date is attached to DXR 2.0, and the only evidence on offer is NVIDIA's own before-and-after comparisons, so the size of the improvement stays unmeasured until the game is out and someone can run it.
RTX Remix mods get the new denoiser today
RTX Remix picked up the same Ray Reconstruction model for mods, on all RTX GPUs, through the NVIDIA app. The Painkiller RTX release on GOG is the substantial one: 15 levels remastered with new textures, multi-bounce lighting, particle effects and volumetric fog, plus RTX IO compression that takes the install from 57GB down to 45GB. That compression figure is the useful number in the post, because path-traced remasters have a habit of tripling a classic game's footprint.
The Morrowind RTX release is a work-in-progress vertical slice covering Seyda Neen and part of Balmora, not a remaster of the game. Treating it as a preview of the technique rather than something to play through is the right expectation to set, and the Remix platform now claims over 240 supported games and 3.8 million mod downloads behind it.
Displays, bundles and everything filed under fall
The one genuinely new panel is AGON by AOC's AGP327KG, a 31.5-inch 5120×2880 display running natively at 144Hz with G-SYNC Pulsar, which until now existed only on 27-inch 1440p panels, plus an ambient light sensor that can drive color temperature and brightness automatically. It was shown at the AGON booth with no price and no date. More useful for people who already own a Pulsar display: its controls are coming to the NVIDIA app instead of living in the monitor's on-screen menu, and NVIDIA says that will require a new Game Ready driver in September. The ASUS ROG panels announced alongside it push refresh rate rather than resolution, with a 700Hz tandem WOLED at 1080p and two 24.5-inch QD-OLEDs at up to 540Hz and 360Hz, and LG's 25G590B-B at $999 is a restatement of a monitor announced earlier this year, with the DisplayPort 2.1 requirement we covered then still the deciding factor.
CONTROL Resonant is now bundled with RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti and 5070 cards, laptops and prebuilt systems as a Steam key, while supplies last at participating retailers and with regional restrictions, and GeForce NOW runs a parallel version of the same offer for anyone buying a 12-month Ultimate membership between August 25 and September 27. The game is out September 24 with path tracing and the full DLSS 4.5 feature set, so the bundle only counts as a discount if that game was already on the list. Two other cloud items are live rather than promised: Firefox became an officially supported browser on August 20, during the week this recap missed, giving Ultimate members up to 1440p at 120fps without installing anything, and GOG single sign-on works today. Everything else GeForce NOW showed is dated no more precisely than fall, including DLSS 4.5 quality controls, Steam Machine and Steam Controller support, and Fire TV Stick 4K Select. RTX Spark sits in that same bucket: Electronic Arts, Embark and Ubisoft joined the publisher list from Computex and NVIDIA is working with EA on native Javelin anticheat support, but there is still no price, no specification and no date beyond "this Fall", for a product that has been on the roadmap since Computex in May.
The practical read for the next few weeks is that September is now carrying three separate NVIDIA commitments: the official Ray Reconstruction release out of Early Access, the driver that unlocks G-SYNC Pulsar controls in the NVIDIA app, and a Game Ready driver before CONTROL Resonant on September 24. At least two of those are plausibly the same download. Until then, 616.56 is the update to take when one of its named fixes matches a problem already present on the machine, and Ray Reconstruction is worth the Early Access opt-in only for people comfortable running a pre-release NVIDIA app channel, since waiting three weeks for the stable build costs nothing.
