AMD’s Ryzen 5 5500F Lands on Ten-Year-Old AM4

AMD's cheapest new six-core is an AM4 part arriving ten years after the socket, and its spec sheet lists Vermeer silicon with Cezanne cache. The Ryzen 5 7500 bolts two RDNA 2 compute units onto the 7500F, and Gorgon Halo gets its first laptop design.

AMD added two six-core desktop processors to its catalogue on September 10, one for each socket it still sells into, and the cheaper of them is an AM4 part arriving almost exactly ten years after AM4 itself. Neither chip introduces a new architecture. What makes the pair worth reading is that AMD's own listing for the AM4 chip gives silicon that does not match the cache it reports, and the answer decides which PCIe generation the slot runs at.

Two six-core parts, one socket each

The Ryzen 5 5500F is six Zen 3 cores and 12 threads at a 3.0GHz base and a 4.4GHz boost, 65W, with 16MB of L3 and no integrated graphics. That cache figure is the one that sets expectations, because it is half what the Ryzen 5 5600 carries, so the 5500F reads as a cut-down 5600 rather than a faster replacement for the Ryzen 5 5500, even if Club386 notes it boosts 200MHz higher than the 5500 and ships with a Wraith cooler in the box. AMD published no recommended price, as Guru3D points out. Scan in the UK listed it at £87.98 with stock due the day after the listings appeared, per OC3D, and TechSpot reports $99 in the US.

The AM5 part, the Ryzen 5 7500, is the Zen 4 Raphael six-core that already existed as the 7500F with a graphics unit added: 3.7GHz base, 5.0GHz boost, 32MB of L3, 65W, and an RDNA 2 iGPU of two compute units running at up to 2.2GHz. Two CUs is a display output and a troubleshooting aid rather than a gaming GPU, and it is the entire reason the SKU exists. The position it lands in is awkward. TechSpot has it at $189 against roughly $226 for the faster Ryzen 5 7600 and about $157 for the graphics-less 7500F, so two compute units are doing all the work of justifying the gap, and OC3D's verdict on the UK listing is blunter: there is very little reason to take it over a 7600X or a Zen 5 Ryzen 5 9600X. Stock is due September 29.

AMD's spec sheet disagrees with itself

AMD lists the 5500F on Vermeer, the chiplet Zen 3 design behind the Ryzen 5000 desktop series, and Vermeer six-core parts normally carry 32MB of L3. This one reports 16MB, which is the Cezanne figure, and Club386 treats the combination as crossed wires somewhere and expects the chip to turn out to be Cezanne after all. That is a reading of a product listing, not something AMD has addressed.

It matters on an AM4 board. TechSpot takes the Vermeer listing at face value and draws the practical consequence, which is PCIe 4.0 support where the Cezanne-based Ryzen 5 5500 is capped at PCIe 3.0. On a ten-year-old platform carrying a recent card or a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive, that link rate is the real difference between the two cheap six-cores, and it is the one specification worth having pinned down before ordering.

Firmware, not the socket, decides what fits

A part that physically fits AM4 is not a part every AM4 board will start. Guru3D has ASUS already announcing support for the 5500F and advises checking the applicable BIOS release for any other brand first, which on boards this old also means confirming the vendor still publishes one.

Boards are still being launched for the socket, which is the more surprising half of the story. MSI's MAG B550 Tomahawk WiFi appeared this week as an AM4 ATX board with 2.5GbE, Wi-Fi 6E, PCIe 4.0, two M.2 slots under heatsinks and four SATA ports, taking up to 128GB of DDR4 at up to 5,100MT/s on the right module configuration, and Club386's rundown lists the 5500F among the CPUs it supports. There is no PCIe 5.0 and no Wi-Fi 7 on it, which is the expected trade for a chipset from 2020.

Gorgon Halo's first laptop design

Sixunited has shown the AXN88B-160M-YD, a 16-inch reference design built around the Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495, and it is the first look at what AMD's Gorgon Halo platform becomes in a notebook. The processor is 16 Zen 5 cores and 32 threads with a 5.2GHz maximum boost and a configurable power range from 45W to 120W, paired with a Radeon 8065S of 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units at up to 3.0GHz. Guru3D's spec sheet puts the memory ceiling at 192GB of LPDDR5X-8533 in one pool shared between CPU and graphics, with as much as 160GB of it allocatable to the graphics side on Ryzen AI Max Pro 400-series systems.

The chassis is the part to watch rather than the ceiling figures. An 18.35mm metal shell weighing about 2.1kg is restrained for a 120W APU, and where the eventual manufacturer fixes its sustained power limit decides whether the 5.2GHz boost and the 3.0GHz graphics clock mean anything after the first minute of load. Storage is two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots, the panel is 2560×1600 at 120Hz, and the battery choices are 85Wh or 99.9Wh, the larger one kept just under the 100Wh line airlines care about. Sixunited is an ODM, so the machine will most likely reach buyers under someone else's badge, and no price, brand, or shipping date has been announced.
