TSMC is reportedly sitting on close to a billion dollars of finished Apple silicon that can't move to the next production step because the memory that has to go with it isn't there yet. That is the DRAM shortage reduced to one data point, and it landed the same week a cooling company found room to cut prices instead of raise them and ASUS pushed a QD-OLED panel to 500Hz.
The memory squeeze reaches Apple's own packaging line
TSMC is holding roughly a billion dollars of Apple's A20 Pro chips on the shelf: finished, but unable to move into packaging because the DRAM that ships alongside them is not available in the volume needed, semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan reported August 6 (Forbes on the TSMC backlog). The A20 Pro is Apple's first chip on TSMC's N2 process, and it uses wafer-level multi-chip module packaging, which fuses the processor and its memory at the same production step on a single wafer. The two pieces cannot be assembled separately: packaging cannot finish without the DRAM already in hand, so a shortfall upstream stalls a chip that is otherwise done (Tom's Hardware on the $1 billion backlog).
Three products share the affected design: the iPhone 18 Pro, the standard iPhone 18, and Apple's first foldable, widely reported as the iPhone Ultra, with combined lifetime production reported near 200 million units and the foldable under a tenth of that volume. Apple and its assembly partners are still reportedly confident about meeting the initial September demand wave; the risk, as reported rather than confirmed, sits in restock speed and store inventory afterward rather than the launch date itself.
None of this is a new forecast about DRAM contract prices, and it should not be read as one. It is a concrete instance of the same shortage that has been repricing PC memory and SSDs all year, showing up somewhere a company with Apple's purchasing leverage still could not fully insulate against it. That is not a reason to expect DIY memory or SSD prices to ease this quarter either.
Arctic hands a tariff refund back to cooler and fan prices
Not every current story in this space is about a price going up. A February 2026 Supreme Court ruling found that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not give the President unilateral authority to impose import tariffs without Congress, which opened the door to refunds on tariffs already collected. PC cooling brand Arctic announced on August 4 that it is passing its refund straight back to US buyers, cutting prices across its entire US lineup, not only the items it had marked up during the tariff period, under a program it calls "The Arctic Promise" (Tom's Hardware on Arctic's price rollback, PC Gamer on the rollback program). The company says the rollback continues until every recovered dollar has been returned to customers, and it is pairing the cuts with hardware donations to technology-education and grassroots PC-building groups in the US. It is a genuinely unusual move for a hardware vendor to volunteer, which is presumably why every outlet covering it led with the same surprise.
Worth keeping separate: this is a tariff correction, not a sign that component pricing broadly is turning around. Arctic's coolers and fans are not exposed to the NAND and DRAM shortage driving SSD and memory prices; a rollback here says nothing about what a memory kit costs next month.
ASUS pushes QD-OLED to 500Hz for competitive play
ASUS listed the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDPR on August 5: a 27-inch third-generation QD-OLED panel running QHD resolution (2560×1440) at up to 500Hz, with a claimed 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time, DisplayHDR 500 True Black certification, and 99 percent DCI-P3 coverage (HotHardware on the PG27AQDPR, VideoCardz on the listing). The monitor keeps QHD rather than chasing 4K, which is the tradeoff that makes 500Hz achievable at all right now: fewer pixels to refresh means more headroom for panel and drive electronics to hit an aggressive rate, the same reason the highest refresh OLED panels on the market keep landing at 1440p rather than 4K. It is built for competitive shooters and esports players who read motion clarity and input latency ahead of resolution, not a general-purpose upgrade.
ASUS has not announced pricing or a release date. The closest existing sibling, the ROG Strix XG27AQDPG, carries an $849 MSRP and has been seen discounted to $699, which gives a rough anchor but nothing more; treat any specific number for the PG27AQDPR as a guess until ASUS confirms one.
