The RTX 4090 is still the card the rest of the market is measured against, which makes it a tempting used buy. Here are its verified specs, the real story behind the 12VHPWR connector, and the inspection points that separate a clean card from an expensive mistake.

More than three years after launch, the GeForce RTX 4090 is still the performance ceiling most buyers actually compare against, and in a market where the current generation offers little worth upgrading to, that has kept demand for used 4090s stubbornly high. It is a lot of card to buy secondhand, though, and it carries one failure mode that deserves more attention than the spec sheet. One detail worth reading correctly: the 4090 does not use a fully enabled AD102. It ships with 128 of the die's 144 SMs active, which is why a hypothetical "4090 Ti" was always physically possible and occasionally rumored. The 76.3 billion transistors and 608 mm² describe the physical silicon; the core counts above are what the 4090 actually lights up.

The launch context

The 4090 opened the Ada Lovelace generation as an uncompromised halo product at $1,599. Against the previous-generation RTX 3090 Ti it delivered a large raster gain and a much larger one in ray tracing, and it did so while being meaningfully more efficient thanks to the jump from Samsung 8nm to a custom TSMC 4N process. The 4090 debuted with the 12VHPWR connector, a 16-pin plug (12 power pins plus 4 sense pins) rated to 600 W under the original ATX 3.0 specification. Soon after launch, users reported connectors and adapters melting or discoloring at the GPU-side plug. The industry response was a revised connector, 12V-2×6, marked H++ against the older H+. It keeps the same 16-pin layout but changes pin geometry: the power pins are lengthened slightly and the sense pins shortened, so the sense pins only complete the circuit once the plug is fully seated. For an owner or buyer, the practical guidance is simple and worth following exactly:

  • Seat the connector until it clicks and sits flush, with no visible gap. This is the single most important step.

  • Inspect adapters and cables for browning, discoloration, or deformed pins, and retire anything showing heat damage.
  • Prefer a native 12V-2×6 or ATX 3.1 PSU cable over the bundled four-to-one adapter where possible.

The feature set that still matters

Beyond raw speed, two things keep the 4090 relevant. The 24 GB frame buffer is still the largest on any mainstream GeForce card, which matters as much for local AI and creator workloads as for gaming; it comfortably holds models and scenes that spill over smaller cards. And the dual 8th-generation NVENC encoders with AV1 support make it a genuinely strong streaming and video-export card, not just a gaming one. A used 4090 is a high-value purchase, so inspect it like one:

  1. The connector, first and always. Examine the card's power receptacle and the seller's cable or adapter for browning, melted plastic, or darkened pins. Any heat damage means the card ran with a compromised connection; treat it as suspect regardless of how it benchmarks. Ask whether a native PSU cable or the bundled adapter was used, and plan to fit a fresh 12V-2×6 cable.
