Memory Price Hikes Slow, PCIe 6.0 SSDs Enter Production, and OLED Goes Inkjet

TrendForce now expects third-quarter DRAM and NAND contract price hikes in the low-to-mid teens, the slowest pace in a year, even as German retail DDR5 set another record in July. Meanwhile Samsung started mass production of a 28 GB/s PCIe 6.0 server SSD, and MSI showed the first monitor built on TCL CSOT's inkjet-printed OLED panel.

Three storage and memory developments from late July are worth a builder's attention as August starts: the first credible sign that memory price increases are decelerating, the first PCIe 6.0 SSD entering mass production, and the first monitor built on an inkjet-printed OLED panel. Each says something about where the market is headed, and none of them changes what a sane person should pay for a 2TB drive this month.

The price curve bends on paper, not at retail

TrendForce's third-quarter forecast, published July 3, projects conventional DRAM contract prices rising 13 to 18 percent quarter over quarter and NAND flash contract prices rising 10 to 15 percent (TrendForce forecast). Those would be painful numbers in any normal year, but after quarters of far steeper jumps they mark the first real deceleration of this cycle. TrendForce's stated reasons: consumer buyers have hit their affordability limit, and PC makers stocked up on client SSDs in the first half of 2026, which is forcing suppliers into more flexible SSD pricing to keep shipments moving. Server DRAM stays undersupplied as production keeps shifting toward AI hardware, so the relief is uneven by design.

Retail has not turned yet. German price tracking reported in late July shows retail DDR5 climbing another 7 percent in July alone, putting it at roughly 4.5 times its July 2025 level, a new record (TechPowerUp on July DDR5 prices, 3DCenter's July index). A 32GB DDR5-6000 kit runs 350 to 420 euros there, and fast 64GB kits brush 1,000 euros. Consumer SSDs took the same ride earlier: GamersNexus measured the popular 2TB NVMe class roughly doubling between late 2025 and its April survey (GamersNexus price survey). The forward-looking part, which can obviously still move: TrendForce estimates NAND supply falls 4 to 5 percent short of demand for 2026, with supply and demand approaching balance during 2027 (PC Guide on the 2027 outlook). If that holds, prices stop accelerating this year and start genuinely easing next year, which makes 2027 the realistic window for normal SSD deals, not this fall.

PCIe 6.0 storage is real, and it is not for your desktop

Samsung announced on July 8 that its PM1763 enterprise SSD entered mass production, one of the industry's first PCIe 6.0 drives (Samsung announcement, TechPowerUp coverage). The 16TB model reads at up to 28.4 GB/s and writes at up to 21.9 GB/s, built on ninth-generation V-NAND with a 4-nanometer controller, and Samsung claims better than twice the performance of the previous PM1753 at around 1.8 times the power efficiency. The target is AI and HPC servers, where drives feed model weights and training data to GPUs fast enough to keep them busy.

For perspective, a PCIe 5.0 x4 link tops out just under 16 GB/s per direction, so a drive like this has no consumer platform to plug into, and none is close: desktop chipsets, controllers, and thermals are still settling into Gen 5. The practical read is less about speed envy and more about where the money flows. The same V-NAND output and controller engineering that could ease consumer supply is being pointed at server products first, which is both why the shortage persists and where every storage roadmap now starts.

The first printed OLED monitor changes the cost math, eventually

MSI unveiled the Pro Max 271UPJW12 in mid-July, the first monitor built on an inkjet-printed OLED panel, made by TCL CSOT (TFTCentral on the MSI panel, FlatpanelsHD report). The panel is 27-inch 4K at 120Hz with a true RGB-stripe subpixel layout, rated around 300 nits full-screen with 1,000-nit HDR peaks and DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. The RGB stripe matters for desktop work: it avoids the text fringing that the triangular and offset subpixel layouts of current QD-OLED and WOLED panels produce. Lenovo announced the first laptop using the same technology in the same week (Tom's Hardware on the Lenovo IJP laptop).

The technology is the story. Inkjet printing deposits the organic emitter material directly instead of evaporating it through fine metal masks, wasting less material and simplifying the line, which is the first structural cost lever OLED monitors have seen in years. The caveats sit right next to the promise: TCL CSOT is running low volume on an older Gen 5.5 line, with the larger Gen 8.6 fab not producing until 2027, and MSI has not named a price or ship date. Early printed OLED will carry new-process pricing; the cheaper-OLED payoff is a 2027-and-later story if yields cooperate.

Nothing in July argues for panic-buying memory or SSDs at current prices unless a build genuinely cannot wait; the increases are slowing, and the credible forecasts point at 2027 for real relief. What did change is the direction of travel: the fastest storage now ships server-first, and the most interesting monitor of the summer is interesting because of how its panel is manufactured, not how fast it refreshes.
